Shopping near Sutton Place

For more than 150 years, Bloomingdale's on 59th Street has been one of New York City’s most iconic department stores. The upscale department store carries everything from apparel to accessories and cosmetics, and even features an outpost of New York’s famous Magnolia Bakery. Another legendary shopping destination in the area is Saks Fifth Avenue, carrying luxury apparel, shoes, accessories, home goods, and more. For furnishings, we recommend Design Within Reach and the D&D Building (Decoration & Design), while Argosy Book Store, founded in 1925, is a must-visit for literary buffs.

Sutton Place Museums and Art Galleries

There’s nothing quite like Sotheby’s — it is one of the world’s largest brokers of fine and decorative art, as well as jewelry and collectibles, and it’s located just north of Sutton Place on the Upper East Side. Art lovers are always welcome to visit the numerous presale exhibitions and gallery shows, which are free and open to the public. Stay for coffee, pastries, or lunch at the in-house branch of Sant Ambroeus, and be sure to visit the Sotheby’s Wine Store, with a selection of bottles ranging from $15 to $15,000. For museums, it doesn't get much better than MoMa (The Museum of Modern Art), housing works by Van Gogh, Rothko, Warhol, and others, while fans of Asian art will want to save time for the Japan Society, which hosts art exhibitions, dance, theater, film, sake tastings, and more.
